Selling A Number Plate

If you have a personal or cherished registration that you’d like to sell, we’d be pleased to handle it on your behalf.

We will advertise your registration here on the Create Your Plate website. This ensures your registration gets maximum exposure to potential buyers.

Should you wish us to sell the registration for you, once we have found a buyer, we’ll send you a letter confirming the details of the purchase. You will need to sign a copy of this and return it to us before we can transfer the registration or make payment to you. Our full terms and conditions will be included in the letter that we’ll send you.

When and How do I get paid?

Whether we’re buying the registration from you, or have found a buyer for you through an advertisement, once the transfer process is complete and your donor vehicle has been allocated a new registration number, we’ll pay you in full by cheque or BACS transfer directly into your account. The process is normally quicker if the registration you’re selling is held on a retention certificate.

Can I change my mind about selling the plate?

You can. If we’re advertising the registration for you, however, you must inform us by recorded delivery so we can remove the number from our adverts.

How will you advertise my plate?

As well as placing your registration on Create Your Plate and including it in our newspaper advertising, we’ll use our contacts in the industry to give it its best chance of finding a buyer.

And how does the sale actually work?

The process involved in either advertising or purchasing your plate is dependant on whether the registration is held on a vehicle or on a retention document.
In either case we’ll explain it in detail when you contact us.If you wish to transfer the plate from a vehicle to a retention certificate you will need to make sure that the vehicle has had a valid MOT certificate (where applicable) and valid tax disc within the last 12 months provided SORN was declared. Please note the Road Tax must not have been refunded, it must have ran out naturally and the must not be a break in the Road Tax Expiry and SORN declaration.
